Envisioning Archival Futures with Cyanotype and Poetry

In this workshop, we will explore the possibilities of cyanotype to find new futures within participants’ archives. Participants are welcome to bring objects, photo negatives, images printed on transparent mediums, fabrics/textiles, and more from their personal belongings to create prints using the sun. Using the sun to produce images and texts, we resist oppressive structures that we collectively work under and probe for new possibilities within research and creation. We will recite and reclaim individual narratives within collective histories of resistance.

Cyanotype is the practice of exposing UV light to mediums such as fabric or paper coated in photosensitive chemicals to create rich blue prints. Using ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, the silhouettes and negatives of objects and images create prints after prolonged exposure to UV light and after rinsing away the solution.

Dans cet atelier, nous explorerons les possibilités offertes par le cyanotype pour découvrir de nouveaux horizons au sein des archives des participant·es. Toutes et tous sont invités à apporter des objets, des négatifs, des images imprimées sur des supports transparents, des tissus, des textiles et autres effets personnels afin de créer des impressions solaires. En utilisant le soleil pour produire des images et des textes, nous résistons aux structures oppressives sous lesquelles nous travaillons collectivement et explorons de nouvelles possibilités dans le domaine de la recherche et de la création. Nous réciterons et revendiquerons des récits individuels au sein d’histoires collectives de résistance.

Le cyanotype est un procédé qui consiste à exposer à la lumière UV du tissu ou du papier recouvert de produits chimiques photosensibles afin de créer des impressions d’un bleu profond. Grâce au citrate d’ammonium ferrique et au ferricyanure de potassium, les silhouettes et les négatifs des objets et des images créent des impressions lors d’une exposition prolongée à la lumière UV, suivant le rinçage de la solution.
